‘Fighting about words words related to homosexuality’

This paper discusses changes in the usage of the Icelandic words hommi and lesbía,
referring to homosexual men and women, respectively. These words used to be
acceptable in a restricted environment only, as they were perceived as carrying negati-
vc connotations, but now they are accepted as neutral words. It is shown that this
change results to a large extent from the efforts by the homosexual groups themselv-
es who adopted the methodology of their colleagues abroad: Instead of accepting the
supposedly more neutral words suggested by various language committees, they
decided to take the semantically loaded words, use them and thus make them neutral
m fact. In this connection the paper discusses the attempts made by various official
committees and institutions, such as a committee in the Teacher Training College
translating terms in psychology and related fields, to suggest other words relating to
