f1 The B.D.Vacutainer System UMBODA \ ISLANDI: 'W" c>&meríókci “ /'óil/iúí/ /29 - Htylijiiulk - Siml SiOSO for ease and simplicity in biood collection D Screw needle into holder and place tube in holder. (Fig.1.) Push tube forward until top of stopper meets guide line (see cross section) thus avoiding blood leakage on entry into vein or premature loss of vacuum. J With rear point embedded in stopper. enter tissue. If in vein, blood flows immediately. NOTE: Technician with small 4. hands. proceed as you would with a hypodermic syringe. VESSEL 1 If in tissue instead of vein—blood will not be drawn. Therefore. con- tinue until vempuncture is signalled by intake of blood into Vacutainer. as shown in Fig. 4 Where vein cannot be located — to conserve vacuum — release tube from rear cannula (see arrow) before withdrawing needle from tissue. What is a VACUTAINER Tube ? An evacuated tube. used with a holder and sterile needle to draw blood specimens. When are they used ? Any time a blood specimen is needed. How are they used ? Basically, like a syringe and needle. tube stoppers anticoagulants What do they replace ? Syringes ... needles . test tubes What are their advantages ? TECHNIQUE ★ Specimen goes directly from vem into clean vacuum tube A closed system every time . a good specimen every time ★ No need to transfer specimen from syringe to tube less spoilage or damage to specimen. Specimen ready to use or to transport to clinical laboratory ★ Tubes available with anticoagulant m proper proportion to volume of blood to be drawn ★ Noneedtoaspiratetolocatevem ★ Tube and holder-needle can also serve as a dropper for performance of tests Becton, Dickinson U.K. Ltd. To obtain blood drops grasp holder as illustra- ted and press bottom of tube. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION INCOMPLETE VENIPUNCTURE which may cause the tube to fill slowly or partially may be corrected by deeper vein entry. TRANSFIXING OF THE VEIN may be corrected by coming back slowly with needle until flow of blood indicates vein re-entry. MULTIPLE SPECIMENS (2. 3 or more) may be taken with one venipuncture and without loss of blood by releasing tourniquet and switching tubes while needle remains in the vein. VEIN OCCLUSION can be minimized by using Vacutainer Adapter and smaller gauge needles (23. 24 or 25 gauge) thus. slowing up flow of blood. CONVENIENCE * Ready-to-use ehmmates time-consuming processing of synnge. needle. etc * Easier to use than syringe and needle . can be used with one hand. * Allows multiple specimens with single vempuncture. * Ideal for taking field specimens for later laboratory analysis. Elimuiar -s necessity of .mixing and measurmg anti- coaguiants A LABORATORV TEST IS NO BETTER THAN THE SPECIMEN AND THE SPEClMEN NO BETTER THAf THE MANNER IN WHICH IT WAS COLLECTED B D AND VACUTAINtR ARE TRADEMARKS
