Jökull - 01.12.1961, Blaðsíða 2
JÖKULL, the journal of the Iceland Glacio-
logical Seciety, completed in 1960 its first decade
of publication. During this period the journal
has been the organ of the society and has publis-
hed papers on glaciology and closely related
fields of the earth sciences. The publication
in Iceland of a relatively specialized journal
is invariably a venture. But the editors feel
that the journal lias been received with in-
terest in glaciological circles, and there is little
doubt that it possesses a considerable ability for
survival. The future of the journal can be view-
ed with optimism.
★
Icelandic activities in many branches of the
earth sciences have increased considerably
during the past decade. In addition to geology,
glaciology and volcanology, which have a tradi-
tion in Iceland, research work is now being
conducted in geochemistry, geomagnetism and
aeronomy, geothermy, isotope geology, meteoro-
logy, oceanography, paleomagnetism and seis-
mology. It is well known that Iceland is a
fertile ground for studies in these fields.
★
Due to the increased research activities there
is now a substantial need for an Icelandic jour-
nal with a broad coverage in the earth sciences.
This matter has been discussed in the Iceland
Glaciological Society and it has been decided
to rnake an effort to meet these requirements
by enlarging the coverage of the JÖKULL and
thereby inviting physical earth scientists to
publish papers in the journal. The JÖKULL
will therefore enter its second decade of publica-
tion as a journal of the earth sciences in Ice-
land.
★
The present issue contains 4 papers which
were submitted to the United Nations Con-
ference on New Sources of Energy in Rome in
1961. These papers cover the field of theoreti-
cal and applied geothermy.
