• Pak Choi is a very early vegetable. During the peak of the growing season,
late June to early August, it takes 28-38 days for the plant to reach optimal
weight, which is 200-350 g. Hypro is a beautiful variety with good growing
qualities.
Because of the growing rate it is not feasible to spray the plants with
chemicals against cabbage worms. This can cause great damage on the plants,
particularly during the peak of the growing season, when the attacks of the
cabbage worms are most severe. Pak Choi seems to be well suited for use in
salads in early summer.
• It tumed out to be easy to cultivate Chinese Cabbage, either in a garden,
under polypropylene, or in an unheated plastic greenhouse, as long as the
plants were pre-cultivated in an amply heated greenhouse.
If the plants were kept under polypropylene the growth period was shortened
. 5-6 days. If the plants are kept long under polypropylene fabric, the quality is
impaired.
The difference between the varieties in trials was insignificant.
• The kohlrabi varieties Blaro, Korist, and Trero, were successfully cultivated
in the trials. The plants developed good knobs in the garden in 8-9 weeks
from planting to harvesting. The growth period under polypropylene was 7-8
weeks.
Although the stems of the kohlrabi plants are quite hard, there was
considerable damage caused by cabbage worms.
Kohlrabi was easily cultivated by direct sowing in an unheated plastic
greenhouse.
• Kálfafellsrófur, Ragnarsrófur, and Vige, are all varieties of rutabaga that are
well suited for Icelandic conditions. The rutabagas increased greatly in weight
through the latter part of August, 90-230 g/m^ per day.
