dwarf Andvari, who had made it for King Heriut of
Hólmgarðr; it resists all weapons and brings victory to
the man who bears it and the dwarf would not lose it for
three hundred pounds of gold; in addition he gives him a
helmet of steel, transparent as glass and adorned with
precious stones; in the centre of the helmet at the top is
the stone adamas; when one looks at the helmet one can
see the Trojans (c/. the note) fighting and when the sun
shines on the helmet it is as though the picture comes to
life. The giant tells Vilhjálmr that Hercules wore this
helmet when he slew the great giant Centauris, whom a
hundred men could not kill, although one of his hands was
tied. In addition he gives him a sword, the blade of which
is eleven spans in length; when the hilt is turned down-
wards, it is as though a wolf runs out to the point from
