SNÍKAR í FØROYSKUM KOMBIKKI, CASTEROSTEUS ACULEATUS L 161 terosteus aculeatus is approximately 150 (Barber, 2007). In the freshwater systems in- vestigated Trichodina spp. and Schistoce- phaius solidus are the dominant species. In the marine environment the parasites ap- pear to be very evenly distributed with the exception of the nematode Hysterothylacium aduncum, which was found twice at one ma- rine locality. However, its low occurrence does not affect the overall picture of biodi- versity. In conclusion Faroese stickleback popu- lations should offer good possibilites for future studies while trying to establish the effect on the host of single parasite species, like Schistocephalus solidus and Thersitina gasterostei. Other Faroese islands also remain to be investigated, especially from an evolu- tionary point of view. Acknowledgements. This work was financed by The Environmen- tal Fund, Ministery of National Affairs, Far- oes; The Scientific Fund of Føroya Sparikassi and the Statoil Faroes Group. The work was carried out at Faroe Fisheries Laboratory (Fiskirannsóknarstovan). Regin Christiansen measured the salinities and important sam- pling help were obtained from the biologists Jóhannis Danielsen and Kári Purkhús. We thank all cooperating persons. The comments and constructive suggestions of the referee prof. Pehr H. Enckell are greatly appreciated. REFERENCES Barber, I. 2007. Host-Parastie Interactions of the Three-Spined Stickleback.
