LÆKNABLAÐIÐ 99 sem hann nefndi „Radiation induced Thyroid Cancer“ (fylgiskjal 1). Að loknu erindi Doniachs tóku þessir læknar til máls og fluttu fyrirspurnir og þökkuðu ágætt erindi: Ólafur Jensson, Sigurður Björns- son, J. Crooks, Þórir Helgason, Sigmundur Magnússon, Arinbjörn Kol- beinsson og Sigurður Þ. Guðmundsson. Prófessor Doniach svaraði fyrir- spurnum, en síðan var kaffihlé. Kl. 16 var aftur gengið til dagskrár, og hófust nú „umræður um læknisfræðilegar rannsóknir": The Incidence of Goitre in Pregn- ancy“. Fyrstur kvaddi sér hljóðs Theódór Skúlason, en síðan dr. J. Crooks og Davíð Davíðsson prófessor (fylgiskjöl 2 og 3). Fyrirspurnum var frestað þar til að loknum síðari erindum um „The Geographic Pathology of the Thyroid“, en ræðumenn í þeim flokki voru dr. Willi- ams, sem gerði grein fyrir hinum ýmsu skjaldkirtilsjúkdómum, Ólafur Bjarnason prófessor (fylgiskjal 4) og I. Doniach prófessor (fylgiskjal 5). Að loknum hinum fróðlegu erindum tóku til máls Guðrún Agnars- dóttir, Páll Sigurðsson og Ófeigur J. Ófeigsson. Að endingu þakkaði fundarstjóri, Gunnlaugur Snædal, ræðumönn- um öllum og fundarmönnum fundarsókn, sleit þinginu og boðaði lækna- þingshóf kl. 19.30 sama dag. Þennan síðari fundardag þingsins töldust fundarmenn um 70. Baldur Johnsen ritari ÚTDRÁTTUR ÚR ERINDUM, FYLGISKJÖL 1—5 Fylgiskj al 1 I. Doniach: Radiation induced Thyroid Cancer Radioactive iodine became freely available for the treatment of hyperthyroidism twenty years ago. At that time the danger of its carcinogenic action on the thyroid gland was considered to be slight, since very few cases had ever been reported of thyroid cancer induced by radium or x-ray therapy to the neck. Since 1947 many patients, possibly more than a quarter of a million in the world, have been given therapeutic doses of radioactive iodine. The possibility that ionizing radiation may induce thyroid cancer was demonstrated in 1950, when Duffy and Fitzgerald in New York found that 10 cut of 28 children with thyroid cancer had received x- ray therapy to the thymus in infancy. Strong supporting evidence has since been collected or both in retrospective studies by Winship of hundreds of children with thyroid cancer and prospective studies by Hempelmann of thousands of infants given x-ray therapy in infancy. They have shown that a few hundreds rads x-rays to the thyroid gland of infants and young children may produce thyroid cancer after an average latent period of about 8 years. Further evidence has been demonstrated in follow-up of patients exposed to radioactive iodine from the fall-out of atomic explosives in Japan and in the Marshall Islands.
