The average temperature of the water at
the source is 87° C and the maximum flow avail-
able from the boreholes was 320 liters per se-
cond. The maximum average dailv heating loacl
carried by the system was attained at an out-
side temperature of approximately zero °C and
amounted to 35 to 40 Gcal/hour. The annual
supply of heat amounted to about 240 Tcal/-
year. A special booster plant was operatecl in
order to raise the temperature of the water
cluring cold spells. The system has been expand-
ed considerably during the past few years and
serves now a total of 40,000 people.
It is of interest to show the cost of distribution
in this first relatively large system of its kind.
The following TABLE III gives the production
and distribution cost of heat in the system as
these figures were before the recent extensions.
The figures are computed on the basis of pres-
ent building prices in U. S. dollars per Giga-
calorie, utilized by the consumers. Profit and
taxes are not included in the cost.

The present average price of the unit heat
in oil-firing house systems in Reykjavík is now
around 7.0 $/Gcal which is about 70% higher
than the total cost given in TABLE III.
