hreyfingunni, sbr. einnig bréf sem Milne (1896) skrif-
aði til ritstjóra dagblaðsins Times 7. september, og
getur það atriði komið heim við fyrrnefndar athugan-
ir Moureaux. Í kafla um þessa skjálfta í nefndaráliti
Symons o.fl. er þeim lýst stuttlega og sagt að þeir
hafi auk áðurtalinna mæla fundist á segulsviðsmælum
í Lundúnum (stöð í Kew-görðum), og skjálftamæl-
um á Ítalíu (Ischia o.fl.), í Þýskalandi (Potsdam) og
Rússlandi (Nikolaiew). Smávegis varð þar vart við
einhverja þeirra skjálfta sem urðu hér í september.
Þótt ef til vill hafi eitthvað af fyrrnefndum mæla-
truflunum orsakast af öðru en skjálftunum á Suður-
landi, fer varla milli mála að þeir hafa fundist erlend-
is. Ef gögn þessara stöðva eða annarra eru enn til í
geymslum ytra, gætu þau ef til vill varpað ljósi á gang
þessarar skjálftahrinu.

SUMMARY
Detection of the 1896 South Iceland earthquakes
It is not generally known in Iceland that seismic waves
from the major earthquakes in South Iceland in Aug.–
Sept. 1896 were recorded abroad; the number of seis-
mic stations operating in Europe at that time may not
have exceeded 20. However, the newspaper “Times”
and the journal “Nature” in 1896–1897 published let-
ters from scientists who had observed disturbances
likely to originate from the Iceland events. Their de-
tectors were seismometers in the Isle of Wight, Edin-
burgh and Strassburg and a vibration-sensitive mag-
netometer near Paris. A compilation in a British 1897
committee report notes some additional European sta-
tions which had observed the earthquake waves from
Iceland.
