Vorferð Jöklarannsóknafélags Íslands 2004 Hvannadalshnúkur í morg- unsól þann 7. júní. Horft af Jökulbaki. – Hvannadals- hnúkur, the highest peak in Iceland. Ljósm./Photo. Magnús T. Guðmundsson. Vegna hlýinda síðastliðinn vetur og vor var sporð- ur Tungnaárjökuls orðinn snjólaus upp í 900–950 m hæð. Á heimleiðinni var ísinn orðinn æði ósléttur. Einn þátttakanda meiddist lítilsháttar þegar vélsleði valt í ísbröltinu. Sem betur fer slapp hann óbrotinn. Siv Friðleifsdóttir umhverfisráðherra náði að skoða Tungnaárjökul, Gjálp, Grímsvötn og Öræfa- jökul í þriggja daga heimsókn sinni. Hún reyndist hinn ötulasti ferðafélagi og mjög áhugasöm um hvað- eina sem viðkom jöklinum og félaginu. Á mánu- dagskvöldinu hélt Siv mótttöku fyrir þátttakendur á Grímsfjalli og gerði Jöklafélagsfólk veigunum drengi- leg skil. Þessi atburður mun einstæður því engin ráð- herramótttaka á Íslandi hefur verið haldin í meiri hæð yfir sjó. ÞátttakendurAllan tímann voru: Alexander Jarosch, Anna Líndal, Ágúst Hálfdansson, Björn Oddsson, Erik Sturkell, Finnur Pálsson, Guðrún Thorstensen, Hannes Har- aldsson, Hlíf Ólafsdóttir, Hrafnhildur Hannesdóttir, Kina Stewart, Leifur Jónsson, Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, Magnús Hallgrímsson, Pétur Þorleifsson, Sjöfn Sigsteins- dóttir, Sólveig Kristjánsdóttir, Sveinbjörn Steinþórsson, Valgerður Jóhannsdóttir, Þorsteinn Jónsson, Þórdís Högna- dóttir. Hluta tímans voru: Gerður Steinþórsdóttir, Guðfinna Að- algeirsdóttir, Halldór Gíslason yngri, Ingibjörg Árnadótt- ir, Jósef Hólmjárn, Siv Friðleifsdóttir, Sóley Stefánsdóttir, Þóra Karlsdóttir. Summary The 52nd annual spring expedition of the Glacio- logical Society to Vatnajökull took place June 4–12 2004. The main tasks of the expedition were: to sur- vey the lake level of Grímsvötn; to measure mass balance at Grímsvötn, Bárðarbunga and Háabunga; GPS-geodetic surveying of fixed points at Grímsvötn and Hamarinn; study changes in geothermal activ- ity at Grímsvötn, including the crater from the 1998 eruption; map the surface of Grímsvötn and Gjálp; measure ice flow into Gjálp and Skaftárkatlar; ser- vice automatic weather-stations on the glacier; and re- measure the elevation of Hvannadalshnúkur, the high- est peak in Iceland. All these tasks were carried out successfully. The lake level of Grímsvötn was 1407 m above sea level, suggesting that a jökulhlaup should be expected at any time. It eventually took place at the end of October, triggering a volcanic eruption on November 1. The height of Hvannadalshnúkur turned out to be 2111 m a.s.l., 8 m lower than the official value of 2119 m determined by trigonometric level- ling in 1904. Further surveys are needed to establish a new elevation. A total of 29 people took part in the expedition. A special guest of the Society was Siv Friðleifsdóttir, Minister for the Environment. The group enjoyed excellent weather during this week on Vatnajökull. JÖKULL No. 54, 2004 137
