the game is drawn, since there are two kings (c/. the note)
left on the board. He is going to seize the ring but her
companion, who is inclined to agree with the king,
suggests that the king and he should joust together and
that the winner should receive the ring. The king agrees
to the proposal and the pages bring out his horse and
armour and place the ring on the tent. If one of the two
men betrays the other during the tournament, he is to
be declared a treacherous villain.
4. The tournament begins and the king discovers that
his opponent is very valiant but at last the latter’s horse
breaks its back. At the same moment the king’s retainers
come out of the forest and the man and woman disappear.
