the hilt, and when the point is turned downwards, it is as
though the wolf runs in under the hilt and seems to be
chasing a squirrel; this sword, which is called Samiron,
once belonged to King Baldvini the strong of India and it
has lain for thirteen years in the nest of the snake Visper
and been hardened in its blood. In addition the giant gives
Vilhjálmr a shield, decked with a thousand marks of gold
and adorned with gems still more precious than the gold.
On this shield is depicted the story of the mighty Jason,
father of Agamenon, king of the Greeks, and of the strong
Duke Menelaus, who was married to Elena the star, of how
he fetehed the golden fleece from Kolkos and how they
killed king Lamidon, the father of King Priamus of Troy;
on the rim of the shield is the story of Alexander of
Macedon, who conquered the whole world, and of how
he was poisoned in Babylon; the shield had belonged to
