the trolls resort to the expedient of carrying off various
kings from the northern part of the world and holding
them prisoner until they have filled the stone house.
Among these kings, fourteen in all, is King Ríkarðr of
England, Vilhjálmr’s father. Every day after the dining-
tables have been removed, the kings play at skin-pulling
(sJcinnleiJcr) and at this all the other kings have to pay
penalties. Ríkarðr alone is so strong that the others are
unable to withstand him, even though they are generally
three against one. He is set to wait on the trolls and tlie
kings at meal-times. The fifteenth and next strongest
man is Isakar, who is employed as the trolls’ cook. If they
