This game is their last, since the kings have now finished
paying off their debts, and it becomes so violent that by
time it is over they are all black and blue and bloody,
with broken legs. There is no one, however, who is a match
for King Ríkarðr or Isakar. After the game King Ríkarðr,
Isakar and two kings called Menon and Krisedus go into
a cave that branches off the main one. King Herkul now
goes to table, after bowls of water have been brought for
them to wash their hands in.
27. The chief of the trolls tells King Herkul that the
gold-house is now full and that the son of King Ríkarðr
has given his promise to come there this day with the gold-
ring to name all the trolls. Should he not come, however,
he will drop down dead where he stands and the chief
will know how to get hold of the ring or of the gold in the
