2. Hjarandi is on an expedition in the west over the
sea and is victorious. He makes raids on Ireland and
subjugates a great part of the land. The Irish king is in
Gunnvaldsborg, a mighty town with many inhabitants.
Hjarandi lays seige to the town but one night the king
escapes with a few men. The next morning Hjarandi
breaks into the town, seizes many goods and burns down
the town. During the fire a big and ugly man comes out
of a kitchen. His hair and shoes have been burnt off him;
he is hunchbacked and stooping; his eyes are ugly and
his teeth even more so. They give him quarter and
ask his name and he tells them that he is called Kolr hunch
(kryppa) and is a slave in the town. When they learn later
that the king is gathering an army together and that this
outnumbers their own, Hjarandi leaves the land and
returns to Garðaríki, where he presents the slave to his
