that in some parts of the world there are trolls still alive
and that they kill human-beings if they see them and
that there are also fairies who live underground. Svíði
owns many goats and he-goats, oxen and wethers.
Vilmundr often minds the animals. He often shoots
animals and birds. Time passes in this way until he is
about twelve years old. On one occasion he wanders round
in the forest searching for his goats and comes further
away from the valley than he has ever done before and
reaches sorne sandy plains, bordered on the one side by a
wide forest. In the sand he sees not only a pile of stones,
in which t-here is some steaming hot water, but also the
footprints of a human-being, something he has never seen
before. He finds a gold adorned shoe, which he picks up
and keeps. Afterwards he goes up to a great rock, towards
