correct here and the page reference erroneous but this
is not likely to be the case. It is possible, as men-
tioned above, that the change-over from p. 170 to p.
171 in 0 has been assigned to too early a point in B1
so that the calculated line-number on 0 170 for B1
8:86 should perhaps be rather lower than 33.
The only one of the line references to Partal. which
can be made to fit the calculation is ‘hotti medh
samma hötti sem förr’, which in F. a. 13 is assigned to
170,12. The second of the two above-mentioned
occurrences (p. liv) of this expression in B1 is on 8:24-
25, i.e. 37 printed lines = approx. 12 lines in 0 after
the point at which the calculation indicates the
change-over from p. 169 to p. 170.
The most significant result of the above calculations
is their demonstration that Jón Vigfússon cannot have
made any radical changes such as abbreviations or
rearrangements to the text of his source.
Jón Vigfússon made no attempt to reproduce the
orthography of his exemplar but for the most part
employed his own orthography. For this, reference
should be made to EdAM A8, pp. xxi-xxii, EdAM
B18, pp. xcvn-cni, EdAM B19, pp. xxvm-xxxi, and
Gunnar Karlsson, ‘Um aldur og uppruna kv-framburð-
ar’, íslenzk tunga 6 (1965), pp. 27-31. The text
betrays, however, a few characteristic features which
must be assumed to derive from Ormsbók: the h-less
forms laupa (2:41) and Lodver (1:39 etc.); o for æ ( <
older æ, œ) in slogir (7:52); 3rd pers.sing. of verbs
used for the lst pers.sing.: hefver ek (4:52), undrar eg
(6:17), sier ek (6:36-37). Such features, some of which
at least are undoubtedly Norwegianisms, were fre-
quent throughout Ormsbók, as generally in Icelandic
MSS of the 14th century. It would be erroneous to
see in this a trace of the original translation, which is
