dom. Now I wish to bear your sorrow with you and not go
home. But no one should abandon himself, Partalopi; rather 30
it is an obligation for a brave knight to nourish himself.”
Partalopi could make no answer then. Now Hlodvir went
away and took food and drink and offered them to Partalopi. 33
He spoke: “You are trying to do a very improper thing
[i.e. prevent me from dying].” Hlodvir did not care about
what he said and raised him up. Partalopi really wanted to 36
resist and could not. Partalopi was now forced to eat and
drink, whether he wanted to or not. He spoke: “Evil is my
life that I shall be forced to accept food unwillingly from a 39
heathen dog.” Now it was nevertheless of no avail for him
to object, because every day he was forced to eat, no matter
how it seemed to him. 42
He now began to grow strong quickly, and as soon as
Partalopi thought he had his full powers, then he spoke to
Hlodvir: “Since you have left all your kingdom for my sake, 46
