a1 He answered: “My name is Partalopi, but I do not intend
to inquire after your name.” “My name is Urækia,” she said. 21
She took him by the hand and lead him out onto the ship
with her and brought him to some island which she owned.
He was all alone there in the house, so that she alone knew 24
—and her attendant [“district” the MS] girls.
Partalopi regained his strength quickly, so that he was
able to go all alone. Urækia now went to find Marmoria, 27
her sister, and Partalopi stayed behind. When she came,
then Marmoria could not speak to her because of her sor-
row. Then Urækia spoke: “What is the matter with you 30
that you can not hold your tears, as if you had lost your
father ? It will surely take a long time for you to moum life
into him, Partalopi, if he is already dead, because he has 33
lost his life because of your tricks.” Marmoria spoke: “You
would both kill men and do other things if you could then—
more [easily] than before—get such a man as Partalopi 36
was. Receive great displeasure because of the affliction [i.e.
which you have caused], and let me live in my sorrow’”
Then Urækia spoke: “You are now full of sorrow, but at 39
Easter you intend to take a man for yourself, and yet many
women remain behind longer after their sweetheart. That is
surely proven tme—as has been said—that one can not 42
trust women, and a woman’s counsels are always cold [fatal],

which she had power over, and gave him that castle to
