excellent jewels with all kinds of skill and colors, and there
was ground gold between the stones for the mortar. These
63 stones were in the bed: cristallus, crisolitus, berillus, sardirus
crisoprasus, amectistus, turetus, garvatus Thus it appeared
to Partalopi, as if that one had to be chieftain of the city who
66 rested there, whether he was a man or a woman. “But
nevertheless I shall now get into this bed—be he ever so
powerful—because that would be said, when I was at home

it. There there was a bed. It was made of the most precious
jewels and all kinds of colors and skill, so well fitted together
that there was ground gold for mortar between the stones.
There were these stones in the bed: christallus [crystal],
berillus [beryl], and smaragdus [emerald]. Of those stones
and other such ones the bed was made. That chair which
stood before the bed was of shining beauty. It seemed to
Partalopi as if that one had to be the chieftain of the city
who owned that bed, whether he was now in it or not.
“But however that is,” he said, “then I shall certainly get
into this bed, because never will be be so powerful, that
it would not seem to me easier to contend with him alone
than with all those others who lay in the halls, those where
I came before, because that I would have said—when I
was at home in France with my father, and I was called
the best knight in all his kingdom—that I would not leave
this bed2 because of one man, even though he came to it.
Now I shall act thus all the more, that I shall not give up
