The geothermal power station at Nesjavellir, 20km east of Reykjavík, is located in the Hengill area, one of the largest heat-producing areas in lceland. Co-generation of electricity alongside hot water production, which has been taking place at the plant since 1990, achieves a more efficient harnessing of its eco-friendly geother- mal resources. Nesjavellir power station welcomes some 15,000 visitors a year, who learn about its operations and enjoy the dramatic natural surroundings of this high-temperature geothermal field.
