REYKJAVÍK ENERGY
Reykjavík Energy operates the world's largest and
most sophisticated geothermal district-heating system,
as well as an electricity distribution network and a
water supply system that meets the most demanding
international standards for the quality of water and its
invironment. Reykjavík Energy's service area reaches
from Borgarfjörður in West-lceland all the way to
Hafnarfjörður, south of Reykjavík, an area where more
than half the nation's population lives.
New possibilities
lceland has the enviable distinction of having an
abundancy of renewable indigenous energy sources.
To improve and increase its services, Reykjavík Energy
is now working on new possibilities in its field of opera-
tion, among them exploring a high-temperature field
around Mount Hengill and constructing a new geo-ther-
mal heating utility in Grímsnes and Grafningur.
All development in the energy market points to fewer
but larger energy utilities in the future. In anticipation of
this, Reykjavík Energy wanted to open new possibili-
ties for utilizing existing investment in the electricity dis-
tribution system over and above its original function.
One of the company's first projects was to form Lína
Net, a company providing data transmission via fibre
optics and via the electricity distribution network itself.
Soon the so-called “powerline” will be a reality in the
Greater Reykjavík area ensuring numerous homes a
constant connection to the Internet in a fast, reliable
fashion. Reykjavík Energy's top priority in the coming
years will be dealing with new development in all sec-
tions of the energy market and will continue to actively
support and develop new products and businesses
related to the use of the company's products.
