NÁTTÚRU FRÆÐIN G U RIN N 185 favorable habitats are covered mainly by Eriophorum angustifolium and to a lesser extent by several Graminae, most notably Calamagrostis neglecta and I'estuca vivipara, but even F. ruhru and Agrostis stolonifera are of importance (fig. 5). In 1964 a non-replicated experiment with fertilizers and grass seeding was initiated on a low-lying part of the lake bottom. The fertilization was repeated 1965. Seeding without fertilization hacl no effect. Fertilization without seeding had limiled effect. Timothy (cv. Engmo) gave good cover (75%) with nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization, and it has reseeded itself into other plots. Witli phosphorus fertilization only, the timothy survived poorly (10—20% cover). The experiment included plots witli Festuca rubra and Poa pratensis which, however, both survived poorly. The fertilized plots soon became elevated above the surroundings are earlier described, 20—30 cm five years after the fertilizer application. The wild vegetation became relatively dense on both seeded and nonseeded fertilized plots. This includes several herbs other than those jtervious- ly named.
