Valgerdur Hallgrimson
Born, June 13, 1891 — Died, July 23, 1956
“And her children shall rise up
and call her blessed . . .” It is hard
to think of anyone of whom this
text is more appropriate than
“Valla” Hallgrimson. For the
family’s close ties and love for her
are well-known to everyone who
knows the family well. I count it
a privilege to have known her as
well as I did, and I would include
myself among those who now rise
up and call her blessed. For truly
here was a Godly woman, a
Christian in the finest sense of its
meaning. A woman who believed
so firmly in her Lord Jesus Christ,
and who tried so hard to follow His
way. 1 thank God that I knew
her, because her life blessed mine.
Valla was born in Gardar, North Dakota, June 13, 1891. She
was one of five children of a prominent Pembina County family,
Joseph and Ingibjorg Walter. She grew up and was educated in the
Gardar community. In 1910 while visiting relatives in Winnipeg,
she met Thorsteinn Hallgrimsson, and two years later, on Easter
Sunday, April 7th, 1912 they were married in the Lutheran Church
of her baptism and confirmation in Gardar. Immediately after she
went with her husband to his farm in the Bru district of Argyle,
Manitoba, and there she has lived ever since. She raised 11 children
of her own, and because her heart was so big, she took into her
home and heart her deceased sister’s little son, and raised him
with the rest of her flock to manhood. Yes, these children rise up
and call her blessed: Ingibjorg, Mrs. Joe Grenier, Edmonton; Sigrun,
Mrs. Arthur Miller, Ohio; Joseph, Edmonton; Bjorn, on the home
