Report of Seventy-second Convention
of the Synod, 1956

The seventy-second Convention of the Icelandic Evangelical
Lutheran Synod of North America was held in Vancouver, B.C.,
July 8 to 11, 1956.
The delegates and guests from Winnipeg and vicinity, travelled
on “The Dominion” of the Canadian Pacific Railway Lines for
two days and two nights. Eventide service was held each night on
the train.
We think back with joy, to the welcome we received on our
arrival at Vancouver; the Buffet luncheon, in the lower auditorium
of the church when Rev. E. and Mrs. Brynjolfson were our hosts;
the tour of the city to many points of interest; the Garden Party
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. Halfdan Thorlakson; the corner
stone laying ceremony; the dedication of the church; the first service
in the new edifice and communion; and the Icelandic service
Sunday evening. The dinners and coffee breaks with recess, where
delegates and visitors could take time to get acquainted . . . the
kindness of our billet hostesses; the special visit to many homes;
the trip to Point Roberts by bus and ferry where the last session
of the Convention was held in Trinity Church and the hospitality
of the ladies of Point Roberts congregation, made our visit to the
west coast a heart-warming and memorable occasion.
The Laymen’s Breakfast in the lower auditorium of the church
at 7.30 a.m. on the second day of the Convention, when Dr. John
Futch, representative of the United Lutheran Church in America
was the speaker; devotional exercises conducted by the Synod
Chaplain Pastor S. T. Guttormson.
Business sessions now got under way, Rev. G. Guttormson,
Minneota, Minnesota, U.S.A., Vice-President, presiding. Officers and
committees presented their reports; The President’s report was
printed in the absence of Dr. V. J. Eylands in Iceland, representing
