SUMMARY
This paper reports on an experimental phonetic study dcsigned to investigate the
extent to which the first and second formants of Icelandic vowcls may vary. The 8
Icelandic monophthongs were embedded in the environments x_sa (giving the long
variant in each case) and x_ssa (giving the short variant). This yiclded 16 different
(partly nonsense) words which were written on index cards, three on each, and 8 speak-
ers (4 mcn and 4 women) were then asked to read the words aloud from a randomized
sequence of these cards. This was recorded on a tape and then the first two words
of each card were used for F^ and F2 measurements (on spectrograms).
