Summary
The Glaciological Society organised the annual spring
expedition (June 2–11th, 2007) to Vatnajökull along
the same lines as in previous years. The huts at
Grímsvötn were the main base oft the expedition
while a smaller group was stationed in temporary
caravans in the eastern Skaftá Cauldron. The main
tasks of the expedition were drilling into the sub-
glacial lake under the cauldron, mapping and other
research at Grímsvötn, glaciological and meteorolog-
ical research, including servicing and installation of
automatic weather stations, and GPS measurements to
monitor magma accumulation at Grímsvötn and study
isostatic movements related to shrinkage of Vatna-
jökull. In addition, the Kverkfjöll geothermal area
at the northern margin of the glacier was surveyed.
All these tasks could be carried out despite difficult
weather conditions, especially during the early part of
the expedition. While the majority of the expedition
participants left for Reykjavík on June 9th, a smaller
group headed back to Grímsvötn to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the old hut at Grímsvötn. Among par-
ticipants of this trip were several of those that took
part in building the hut in 1957.
Meðan Eiríkur, Jón og Tanya stóðu í ströngu við að ganga frá kerrum og öðrum flutningi, stilltu aðrir sér upp til
myndatöku. Frá hægri: Magnús Tumi, Inga, Haukur, Magnús, Ólafur, Hulda, Árni, Auður, Stefán og Halldór.
