and sparsely populated areas. When he has gone through
a certain forest, he is to turn south-west in the direction
of the sea. Afterwards he is to traverse a desolate forest
that is so big that it will take him a week to cross. He will
then come to a city called Trekt where a king rules who is
called Kato. From this city he is to ride up along a moun-
tain, lying to the south, and when, after the passage of
three days, he has traversed this, he will come to a valley
containing a great forest. From the road through it a
secret path will lead off 011 the right and when he rides
along this he will come in the evening to a fine house
where Astrinomia’s foster-mother, Ermlaug, lives. She
has been married but her husband disappeared and after
this she left Trekt in order to live in solitude. Vilhjálmr is
