identified with séra Halldór Eiríksson (d. 1698),
priest at Hjaltastaður in Útmannasveit, N. Múla
sýsla,8 and his daughter Hallný (born c. 1686).9
Hallný’s signature, which is stated to be autograph,
can hardly have been written before the turn of the
century. If she owned the book, she was probably its
last owner before Arni Magnússon. Briniolfr (f. 61v -
possibly written in Hallný’s hand) may be identical
with Hallný’s husband, Brynjólfur Olafsson (c. 1677-
1730), priest at Háls in Hamarsfjörður (S. Múla
sýsla).10 Arni Magnússon obtained part of AM 574
4to from Brynjólfur Ólafsson in 1711 (KálKatAM),
and although there is no information as to the proven-
ance of AM 533, it is not inconceivable that it, too,
was obtained from Brynjólfur or his wife.
Earlier in the 17th century, however, the MS must
have been kept at the farm Njarðvík in Borgarfjörður,
N. Múla sýsla (not far from the above-mentioned
Hjaltastaður). This farm was owned by two brothers,
Einar (digri) and Arngrímur (ríki), sons of Magnús
Þorvarðsson. Both had sons and grandsons who
inherited their fathers’ half-shares of the farm, and
the two branches of the family lived together at
Njarðvík until Arngrímur’s grandsons, Páll and Jón,
sold their half-share to Einar’s son Magnús in 1677
and 1679.* 11 The names of several of the descendants
of both Einar and Arngrímur are written in the MS:
Arngrymur Halljion (f. 60v), hallr eiinarsson?) (f. 52r),
Havardur magnusson (f. 61v), Havardur maginusson>
(f. 8 bis r), Hauardur (ff. 43r, 45r, 52r, 53v, 61v,
where it is written in the same hand as Briniolfr, cf.
