There is another MS of Partal. which is in Magnús
Jónsson’s book-hand. This is Lbs. 1503 4to, which
must be considered to be a transcript of 1159 (cf. be-
low pp. xciv f.). In the introduction Magnús himself says
of this transcript: ‘Þessi saga er skrifut í fyrstu eptir
sögubók er skrifað hafði Loptr Jónsson á Kambi í
Trékyllisvík, forföður Hjálmars kaupmanns Jónssonar
í Kaupmannahöfn2 . . . Ek hefi á öðrum stad lýzt
þessu merkilega sögubókar handriti, ok sagt frá þuí
huersu þat týndist fyrir fult ok alt’.
Lbs. 1503 4to is the thirteenth of a series of 20
volumes, all written by Magnús, Fommannasögur
Norðurlanda I-XX, and the reference may be to the
preface to volume XX, the last page. Here it is stated
that the MS in question once belonged to Magnús’
parents but afterwards ‘eidilagdist alveg einkennilega,
ok er nu ecki lengr til’.
Magnús Jónsson’s comments are presumably to be
interpreted as meaning that he “í fyrstu” wrote 1159,
a transcript of Loptur Jóhannsson’s MS, and then -
after the latter had been lost - wrote 1503, a
transcript of 1159.
1159 and UB 1156, 1157 and 1158, all written by
the same scribe, were bought in 1932 from an
Icelander resident in Norway, Albert Olafsson of
Gvarv in Telemark. He stated that these MSS came
from Saurbær in Dalasýsla, Iceland.3
