The quotations from Partal. in the lexicographical
works can thus be assigned to Ormsbók pp. 166-70.
The first quotation is ‘Stiornu book’, a word that
occurs at 1:7, which means that unless Partal. began
at the very bottom of p. 165, it must have begun on p.
166.14 The work which, according to the list of
contents in Index, came after Partal. in Ormsbók,
namely ‘Enoks saga’ (Disciplina clericalis), began on
p. 172.15 A more exact calculation reveals that ‘Enoks
saga’ must have begun about 20 lines down on p.
172,16 and if nothing came between Partal. and
‘Enoks saga’,17 then the conclusion of Partal. must
the text of his source, an assumption which is no longer valid if the
quotations have been correctly located above.
14 The form ‘stiornu bökar’ also occurs B1 2:4-5 but it is not
likely that this is the point in the saga to which reference is made,
for one reason because the translation politica is less appropriate
here.
15 J. Louis-Jensen, op.cit. p. 228.
16 There are 127 printed lines in the edition of ‘Enoks saga’
(Islendzk œventýri I) between two quotations which the lexico-
graphers assign to p. 177, lines 2 and 50 respectively (IÆv LXVIII,
82 and LXX, 53). Since there would seem to have been an average
of 49/50 lines per page in O (see EdAM A8 p. xm, C. Sanders
op.cit. p. 148), a page in O must have corresponded to about
130 printed lines in IÆv. This result is confirmed by the fact that
there are 133 printed lines between 177,15 and 178,16, 130 prin-
ted lines between 177,33 and 178,32, 132 printed lines between
178,8 and 179,8, 134 printed lines between 178,16 and 179,15 and
125 printed lines between 178,29 and 179,28. Counting backwards
accordingly from the change-over between O 177 and 178 = IÆv
LXX.53, we arrive at the change-over between O 172 and 173 at
ÍÆv LI,3. The preceding 78 lines in ÍÆv = 30 lines in O (= 3/5
page) must thus have stood on 0 172, i.e. ‘Enoks saga’ must have
begun at (approx.) 1. 21.
17 There can hardly have been room for anything else between
the two texts but F.d.9 gives the quotation ‘Greina’ with a
reference to Ormsbók p. 172 and this quotation can be assigned
neither to Partal. nor to ‘Enoks saga’.
