A1 A2 A3 A4 etc...
Two agreements between A1 and A3, where A2 = B1,
could be quoted against this stemma:
5:4 gvdvef A1-3, guduefiar pelli A2B4.
6:60 þa skal þat (+ friettast A3) ahvert land spyriazt (+ A3)
hversv hædiliga ek skal þik abrvtt reka (ellta A3) A13] elligar
verdr þu heingdr hærra enn nockur þiofur jfranzs A2; kvad
hann vera þeíi verdann at hann være níí heingdur i haum
galga B1.
The first instance can be explained away, since the
same omission can have been made accidentally in
both MSS, but the second instance is surprising.
However, the threat ‘you deserve to be hanged’ is by
no means uncommon in the riddarasogur, see Forn-
sogur Suðrlanda1 p. xxv (Hotelser); cf. also Fornsogur
Suðrlanda p. 241 (Bevers saga), Karlamagnús saga2
p. 460,7 and LMIR III3 p. 95,10 (Adonias saga). It
must be assumed that two scribes, independently of
each other, inserted the threat at this point (the
wording differs, in fact, in the two MSS). No impor-
tance can be attached to the two instances of agree-
ment in the face of the wealth of data which supports
the assumption of the existence of the intermediate
texts *Aa and *Ab.
Almost a quarter of the saga is missing from A2
(10:20 to end), cf. above, p. xxxiv. Partal. in AM 119a
