seemed to her eounselors little ability to rule the kingdom A1
in her, then they advised her to marry that man who was
12 the most outstanding in all things, as befitted her noble
birth. There were also many kings and princes in her king-
dom who were excellent, such that each hoped for himself
15 that she would want to marry [him]. But she wanted no one
of them, because she wanted to marry that one who was most
outstanding, first in knighthood and after that in all other
18 accomplishments, whether he was a prince or another man.
She was also so powerful that twenty-four kings served her.
Her kingdom extended north all the way to the Elbe.
2. At that time there ruled over France that king whose

Now although she had well succeeded to the country as b1
concerned intelligence and honesty, then it seemed to her
counselors as if little defense of the country or rule of the
kingdom would come from her, because she was a woman,
even though she was very accomplished. Her counselors
wished that she would marry that king who was well suited
to take care of the country and the rule of the kingdom and
was of royal birth in all his extraction. Many were the kings
and excellent knights in her kingdom, those who were
accomplished in all things. They thought that she would
now choose some one of them then as ruler, but she wanted
no one of them and said she had chosen and would marry
that man who was most accomplished in all those things
which could adorn a man and were appropriate to the wielding
of royal power. Next she had messengers go into the king-
doms of those kings who were in her power, because she
was so powerful that twenty-four kings were in her power1
in her kingdom. For that mission she chose the wisest men
and those men whom she trusted most and who seemed to
her the most proven in faithfulness and good will. Now they
left one day and went to the kingdoms of those kings who
were told about before.
