whose name was Partalopi. He was then fifteen years old, 3
but he was old in wisdom, so that no one was his match in
France, thus in all accomplishments as in stature and appear-
ance. Also no one was a better scholar in France than he. 6
He was humble and popular. Marmoria learned of that, that
he was the most outstanding of all those whom she had seen
or heard of or found out about in her kingdom. Then she 9

was then proven in strength and knighthood, so that no
one was his match, neither young nor old. He was the most
accomplished of all men in strength and other manly
qualities, those which could adorn a good knight. There
was not a better scholar in France than he, because he knew
well both heathen and Christian books. He was gentle and
humble and popular, generous and moderate. All the king’s
retainers loved him as if he were their brother or father.
Now these messengers came to France whom Princess
Marmoria had sent to find out which man was the most
accomplished in that country in knighthood or all other
accomplishments. It was told to them that no one was
equal to Prince Partalopi in all things. After that they went
to where King Hlodver was. King Hlodver received them
and was most friendly, both because her rule extended
over him and he was a very great [generous] chieftain.
The king asked them for much news, and they said who
they were. They paid close attention to the king’s son, and
he appeared to them very promising and aeeomplished in
