things seemed to him to be going there on that ship con-
cerning the sailing as if a man were holding on to each rope,
27 although he saw no one, and this seemed very strange to
him. Now he thought he was not well situated—that he was
all alone out at sea and could see neither land nor men.
30 But nevertheless he saw land at last—large and beautiful.
There he saw a fortified city so big and lovely that he had
never seen such a one before. Now he thought he would be
33 well off, if he might make it to where the city was, if he
might find people.
Now the ship came to land by the city. He now went from
36 the ship with his horse and dog, mounted, and rode to the

out to sea after that. That sailing seemed to him to be as
if a man were holding on to each rope, although he saw
no one. It seemed to him strange how that could be. Now
he thought himself not well situated that he had come out
to sea all alone and could not see land nor any men. But
then he saw at last a lovely country, and there there stood
a large fortified city, big and strong and very beautiful,
so that he thought he had never before seen such a one.
Now he thought himself very fortunate if he might make
it to that city where he could find some one, him who
would make known to him where he had come.
Now the ship came quickly to land there where the prow
touched6. He went from the ship there—hishorseand dogs—
rode to the city and wanted to get himself lodgings and

conjecture: the city was.
