After that it was told Markauld, and they now both got
ready to ride out to battle. They were armed with their best
armor which any knight would care to bear. That one of 111
them should get those cities and kingdoms who came out
the better. But if any one from either one’s host assisted
his lord, then that one should suffer death quickly. Next 114

dishonor for himself in that—to part with his kingdom—
than to lose his life in a duel because of as noble a fellow
as this man, the king of the Bretons, was said to be.
CHAPTER VI.
Partalopi and Mannholld, King of the Bretons,
Ride Out to Battle.
Early in the morning they got ready to ride out to battle,
Partalopi and Mannholld1, king of the Bretons, with sharp
spears and all kinds of weapons. It was specified between
them, that if any one from either of their hosts followed
his chieftain, then that one should lose his life who had
him with him in his host2. That was also decided between
them, that that one of them should have the kingdoms of
both who came out the better from their dealings. After
