could see into her quarters. Twelve knights kept watch over

He took the stone and thought he now would see her so
279 that more people would not know that. But as soon as the
stone came into his hand, then he saw that sight which he
had never before seen—such a one as then was in bed beside
282 him—because her skin was as white as newfallen snow in a
dry wind. Her eheeks were like the loveliest rose. Partalopi
was very happy at this sight. Next he woke her and spoke:
