A1 was like on a sea-scorpion( ?). His ears were more like hides—
hairy both outside and inside. His nose was like on a female
monkey, and his skin like shellfish [i.e. very rough], and 102
legs smeared with pitch. His hair was black as pitch, and
his beard so long that it touched his navel. His name was
Gram—stooping in the shoulders. He had a hump on his 105
back, and his nails were like vulture’s claws. When Par-
talopi saw this large dog, then he thought this: “If
God were willing that I had my weapons, then I would 108
quiokly kill this devil.” Now Partalopi went to him and
spoke: “Good day, sir.” But Gram did not look at him with
friendly eyes and answered him: “May you never be blessed.” m
Partalopi spoke: “Can it be so, sir, that you will grant me
accommodations tonight?” “Yes,” the gentleinan [ironic!]
said, “I shall certainly grant them,” and seized Partalopi m
and tied both his hands behind his back and spoke thus:
“From where did you get that boldness, you evil thief, that
you came here to mock me and scoff ? Thus I shall reward 117
you for your effort—like others before.” He dragged him
with him up into the tower until he came into a large hall
and took there a fetter and put it on his feet and spoke: 120
“Evil fool, sit here now with these who are bound here,
and you shall starve to death here.”

All his skin was shaggy like a bear. Partalopi greeted him
and asked him for lodgings. He answered: “You will hardly
have come here then through my intention, like many other
men who have come here. Indeed you shall now have like
accommodations as they.” He seized Partalopi afterthat
and put fetters on his feet and a bow string on his hands
and threw him into a dungeon. There there were now many
prisoners.
