Accommod-
ation of the
Rafiðnaðarsamband,
Lífiðnar and Matvís at
Stórhöfði 31
The design of office accommoda-
tion today has to meet increased
demand for adaptability and cost,
while simultaneously communicate
a pleasant image and quality of the
work environment, which has
become more in-demand. The
design of the accommodation of
the Rafiðnaðarsamband, Lífiðn and
Matvís is a good example of a proj-
ect where an ambitious client want-
ed a live and attractive environment
for ambitious and progressive trade
unions. Professional goals and cost
was the focus but the client was
open to ideas that could create an
interesting and economical work
environment.
The accommodation is on four
floors. On the first floor are offices
and reception of Lífiðn. The second
floor houses the offices of the
Rafi_na_arsamband, while meeting
rooms are located on the third floor.
A cafeteria for employees is in the
basement, along with changing
rooms and teaching rooms for vari-
ous courses given by the trade
unions.
The consultants, Arkís, offered in
this instance a complete service,
including the general planning of
the accommodation and even the
design of furniture. The three
durable materials that were mainly
used were oak, glass and steel,
which help to create a cohesive
whole within different parts of
the building.
During the design of the building
flexibility was one of the objectives.
The office of the
Rafiðnaðarsamband, for example,
was divided into open work area
that can be subdivided as needed
and half-closed offices with large
doors that can be opened. This
permits good contact between
management and the office work-
ers, but also privacy when needed.
An attempt was made to bring day-
light into as much of the structure
as possible. Glass partitions in
parts of the office walls let daylight
into the central concourse.
Cost for the project was within the
price range of a typical office
space, although both the housing
and furniture were specially
designed for the client. With its
pleasant image and interior, the
accommodation at Stórhöfði 3f is
a good example of what can be
done when architects and their
clients work together towards a
common goal. ■
