Sanguisorbaofficinalis L. and
Sanguisorba alpina Bunge (Rosaceae)
1N ICELAND.
Apart from a few species, which are planted as
ornementals, two species of the genus
Sanguisorba grow naturally in Iceland, namely
Sanguisorba officinalis L. and Sanguisorba
alpina Bunge. However, up to the present all
references in the literature and herbarium collec-
tions have only recognised S. officinalis, al-
though specimens of both species are present.
This paper aims to describe the characteristics
which differentiate between ihem and describe
their respective distribution in Iceland. S.
officinalis is an old member of the Icelandic flora,
probably colonising the country soon after the
end of the last glaciation. It is found as two
seperate populations in southwest and west Ice-
land and does always occur in undisturbed plant
communities. On the other hand, S. alpina is an
introduced alien which became naturalised dur-
ing the late 19th or, at the latest, in the early 20th
century. It grows in and around abandoned gar-
dens or on disturbed sites in various parts of the
country. The occurrence of S. alpina as an alien
is peculiar to Iceland as it has never been re-
ported from other parts of Europe, where it is
rarely cultivated except in botanical gardens.
