kemur Grímur bóndi heim. Brá honum mjög í
brún, er hann heyröi, að Þorsteinn mágur hans
hefði þar komiö og farið fram á heiðina, og sagði,
að þau skyldu eigi farið hafa á heiðina, ef hann
hefði heima verið; kvaðst hann hafa séð það á
sjónum, að brátt mundi koma hið mesta óveður
og stórhríð, enda fór sem hann sagði, því að
skammri stundu síðar brast i hina verstu stór-
hríð og ákaflegt óveður, sem stóð umi nóttina eptir
og allan næsta dag. Var þá snjór mikill kominn,
er upp stytti. Vissi nú enginn meir um ferð þeirra
Þorsteins, en hestur hans kom heim að Skriðu
þessa sömu nótt, og var beizlið bundið um háls
honum. Klyfjarnar af hestunum fundust síðan á
Sæluhúsi, sem kallað er. [Þar var sæluhús fyr á
öldum, en hefur nú ekki verið um langan aldur,
og var eigi, þegar þessi tiðindi urðu, örnefnið eitt
er eptir. í sæluhúsi þessu gerðist sagan um „Bjarna“
er Björn Þ. Víkingur reit í Huld IV. h.]. Það er
nær miðri heiðinni; hafði þar verið tekið af þeim,
en hestarnir fundust siðar fram í Mælifellshögum
og víðar. Líkin fundust eigi fyr en um vorið, að
sn’ó leysti. Höfðu ferðamennirnir farið þann veg, er
Höfuðreiðar heita, þar er grjótgil eitt; í því gili
fundust stúlkurnar, sitjandi í söðlum sínum, og var
breitt yfir þær áklæði; höfðu þær hvergi hreyfzt
þaðan. Þar fannst Þorsteinn upp undir brún í gil-
mu vestanverðu; stóð hann þar í snjóskafli, og var
nær kominn upp úr gilinu, en hefur þá kafnað af
hríðarkófinu; hafði hann áður gengið frá stúlk-
unum þannig, er þær fundust, að þvi er ráðið varð.
i n fylgdarmennirnir höfðu komizt lengst, enda voru
þeir léttfærastir, er þeir voru búnir að sleppa lest-
nini; hafa þeir og haldið áfram viðstöðulaust, og
