SUMMARY
‘Feedback in Icelandic conversations’

This paper discusses verbal feedback in conversational storytelling. Some of the
functions of feedback could be Iooked upon as redundant in storytelling because the
storyteller has already made a sort of an agreement to hold the floor for a longer per-
iod than for a normal turn. He does so with a story preface like “I know a guy who
wanted to go north before Easter” (5) or “then there was one [guy] who was working
with me sko (7)”. The paper reveals that feedback is used quite regularly in the 11
stories scrutinised here. The main findings were that all of the feedback items used in
the stories, belonged to what Allwood (1993) calls “primary basic feedback units”,
mainly já ‘yes’ and mhm. Laughter is also an obvious feedback token. There seems to
be some tendency to choose different feedback items in different parts of the stories.
Thus mhm mainly occurs in the beginning and the middle of the stories and laughter in
the middle and at the end. The location of the feedback is mainly in complex transistion
felevant places, in a micro pause where syntactic, pragmatic and interactional bound-
aries coincide. It is noteworthy that even if there are three or four participants in all
the conversations discussed here, only one person is responsible for giving the feed-
back in each story, probably chosen as a primary addressee by the storyteller.
