Fjölmargar rannsóknir hafa verið gerðar á því hvernig
börnum farnast eftir ættleiðingu og hafa meginniðurstöður
leitt í ljós að mikið er hægt að vinna upp af því sem upp á
vantar hjá börnum sem búið hafa á stofnunum, en þá skiptir
mestu máli að sem fyrst sé brugðist við. Einnig eru almennt
talið að gæði ættleiðinga grundvallist m.a. á góðum undir-
búningi væntanlegra kjörforeldra.
