Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1956-Sept. 1957
The Icelandic coasts were free of drift ice
throughout the period. Only some single blocks
were sighted from the nortliivestern promon-
tories in June and September.
Distances are given in nautical miles.
OCTOBER 1956.
The ice belt at the Greenland coast south of
Scoresbysund was 30—40 miles tuide and its
average distance from Cape Straumnes over
100 miles.
^/xo The boundary of drift ice was running
from 7000/2000 (70° N, 20° W) to 6900/2000
to 6845/2200 to 6845/2400 to 6825/2330 to
6730/2430 to 6810/2900.
Two extremely large icebergs were located
at 6510/3530.
The ice coverage averaged 8/io but within a
twelve miles radius of 6925/2230 coverage was
10/10-
8/io The boundary of ice along the Green-
land coast was from 7015/2200 to 6930/2125
to 6830/2425 to 6800/2650 to 6745/2900 to
6800/3145. The concentration averaged 8/io
within the boundary.
18/io The outward boundary of drift ice
along the eastern coast of Greenland was ob-
served at 7010/2000 to 6910/2215 to 6858/2200
to 6820/2430 to 6830/2500 to 6730/2730 to 6750
/3030 to 6735/3045 to 6750/3200. Scattered ice-
bergs were sighted through the observed area.
24/to The outward boundary was running
from 7000/2050 to 6700/2520 to 6730/2850 and
to the coast at 6740/3300.
Coastal reports: Five single icebergs were
sighted 10 to 20 miles off the northwestern
promontories throughout the month.
NOVEMBER 1956.
The average distance of the ice edge from
Straumnes was about 100 miles with nearest
approach of 60 miles. Towards the end of the
motnh the drift ice had reached an unusually
advanced positon towards the SE on the Green-
land Sea, the boundary being only 87 miles off
Cape Látrabjarg.
i/n Ice limits frorn 6930/2150 to 6845/2200
to 6730/2600 to 6705/2830 to 6745/2815 to
6705/3000 to 6730/3115 to 6630/3200 to the
coast at 6620/3445.
Numerous icebergs were sighted throughout
the observed area.
26/n The general boundary was observed
from Cape Brewster to 6900/2050 to 6725/2400
to 6700/2545 to 6600/2650 to 6530/2800 to
6517/3000 to 6514/3200 to 6600/3500.
30/ix The ice edge was from 6900/2130 to
6830/2210 to 6752/2350. to 6730/2528 to 6720/
2555 to 6640/2555 to 6600/2700 to 6520/2815
to 6515/2950 to 6620/3030 to 6600/3200, thence
to Cape Gustav Holm. Scattered icebergs were
sighted, one large at 6650/2450.
DECEMBER 1956.
The ice edge on the Greenland Sea zuas re-
ceding toiuards the coast of Greenland. Its
average distance from Straumnes tuas about
100 miles witli nearest approach of some 70
miles.
1 /12 Ice boundary from Cape Brewster to
6900/2230 to 6800/2420 to 6700/2645 to 6640/
2800 to 6635/2900 to 6640/3100 to 6625/3300.
An area of slush and brash extended east-
ward about 15 miles from the ice pack. Numer-
ous icebergs were sighted in the vicinity of
6630 N, 2800 W.
14/i2 The ice boundary was observed from
6520/3255 to 6730/2925 to 6715/2840 to 6810/
2600. Ice concentration within this area was
10/io.
21/i2 Ice boundary on 6520/3800 to 6525/
3525 to 6610/3150 to 6710/3150 to 6705/3000
to 6750/2600. Numerous icebergs were sigthed
in the vicinity o£ 6800/2600. Three icebergs
were observed at 6510/2800 (about 100 miles
W of the mouth of Breidafjord). Ice concentra-
tion west of the boundary was 10/io-
