so that our classification will have to be revised.
A provisional reclassification is shown in the
diagram. The group found a cairn close to
Barkárjökull that is almost certainly that of Páll
Bergthórsson (Jökull 1956, p. 29). The snout is
now some 393 m from this, giving a retreat of
just under 9.5 m/yr for 1956/75. Nine long
profiles were measured on eight of the glaciers
with one profile running 4,500 m between
Fll and 05/F12. Six ‘jöklamerki’ were establish-
ed beyond the northern section of Barkárdals-
jökull (05/Fll) with another on the southern
section (05/D5). A further nineteen cairns were
erected as follows:

North Iceland Glacier Inventory - 1976 Field Season
All the work was concentrated on Basin D
(Svarfadardalur-Skídadalur) and Basin E (Thor-
valdsdalur). An early season expedition from
Glasgow High School led by Bob Metcalfe
mapped Glacier D 39 (Hálsjökull) at a scale of
1:5000. This is the glacier beside which Helgi
Hallgrímsson established a ‘jöklamerki’ in 1972.
They also visited and completed data sheets for
four other glaciers.
The work on Gljúfurárjökull was continued
by Soharn Village College but unfortunately all
their results were stolen at Heothrow airport.
However, it is expected that the entire basin
will be mapped in 1977.
The work in Thorvaldsdalur was completed
by Serena Bridges and will be published shortly.
Dr. Nigel Griffey has completed the base maps
for the entire Tröllaskagi peninsula.
