most certainly from the 1440 AD and 1416 AD erup-
tions at Katla, but the origin of the dark tephra layer is
uncertain (Fig. 5). The Öræfajökull marker tephra is
identified in four profiles as a thin and discontinuous
white layer of very fine ash. It is not preserved at
other locations, which is not unexpected because the
area is at the distal edge of the Öræfajökull ash fall
(Þórarinsson, 1958). Just below the Öræfajökull
