It was not possible to date the outermost moraine in front of the Ögmundarjökull outlet glacier due to a lack of lichens on the moraine. Only 10 samples of the lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum were found on the proximal side of the moraine. The results indicate that the glacier began to retreat from its maximum LIA glaciation in 1923±2 AD (Table I; Figure 6). Temporal comparison of aerial photographs between 1946 to 1987 indicates that the glacier retreated 400m from its maximum LIA advance and 1946. From 1946 to 1979 the glacier retreated another lOOm. The glacier stayed at the same position in 1979 and in Fig. 4. An aerial photograph showing the surface of the Klofajökull deposit in 1987. The easternmost lobe is probably an ac- tive rock glacier at present. Evidence indicate deformation of ice within approximately 700 m from the visible ice-debris con- tact on the surface, marked by the solid black line. The foot of the apron is at 600 m a.s.l. - Loftljósmynd sem sýnir landslag Klofajökulsurðarinnar árið 1987. Austasta tunga urðarinnar er sennilega virkur grjótjökull í dag. Ummerki á yfirborði urðarinnar sýna ís á hreyfingu innan við um 700 m geislafrá snertisvœði jökuls og urðar, merkt sem heildregin svört lína. Rœtur urðarinnar eru í um 600 m y.s. 22 JÖKULL, No. 46, 1998
