Abstract
Glacier variations between Fell and
Staðarfjall, southeastem Iceland
In this article, the late farmer Flosi Björnsson
describes glacier variations in in his surroundings, the
eastern part of the Öræfi district, southeastem Ice-
land. The period mainly treated is the latter part of the
nineteenth century and the first half of the *twentieth
century.
The glaciers were close to their maximum extent
in the period 1870-1890 after having advanced for
several centuries. Most of the glaciers retreated slow-
ly during the next three decades. In the 1920's and the
1930's the rate of retreat increased radically, although
some parts of Breiðamerkurjökull were at the outer-
most terminal moraines as late as 1933. The reported
variations of the terminus of Breiðamerkurjökull
indicate surge activity but only parts of the glacier
were active at the same time.
