years. Having many sexual partners is not common among young
people in Iceland although the incidence of having had casual sex
the past twelve months is highest among young people aged 16-25.
Young people, this age, had on average 1.7 sexual partners in the
year 1991. Having many sexual partners was found to be associated
with STD infection (p<0.001). Men who have had sex with other
men constituted 3,6% of the sample. One out of four men who
have travelled abroad for business reasons have, at some time in the
past, had sex with a foreign prostitute. Comparison with previous
studies shows an increase in the number of people, particularly
among young people and the divorced, who say they have changed
their behaviour because of the risk of Aids, for example by having
fewer casual sex partners.
