Símonarson and Leifsdóttir landic north and northeast coasts was apparently lim- ited because of mixing with colder water masses with reduced salinity from the East Icelandic Current. Acknowledgements We would like to thank Már Vilhjálmsson for per- mission to include in this work some of his results from the Máná Formation of the Breiðavík Group, Dr. Jón Eiríksson, Institute of Earth Sciences, Univer- sity of Iceland, for his great assistance in the field, and Oddur Sigurðsson for photographing most of the species dealt with in this paper. Furthermore, thanks are due to Dr. William E.N. Austin, University of St Andrews, Dr. Svend Funder, Geological Museum, University of Copenhagen, Dr. Jens Matthiessen, Al- fredWegener Institute for Polar andMarine Research, Dr. Leó Kristjánsson, Institute of Earth Sciences, Uni- versity of Iceland, and an anonymous reviewer for valuable comments on the manuscript. The project was supported by the University of Iceland Research Fund. Ástæðan gæti verið sú að þegar skilin á milli kald- sjávar og hlýsjávar (The Polar Front) færðust norð- ur yfir landið fyrir um það bil 1,1 milljón árum hafi þau legið það stutt við norðurströndina að kaldsjávar- tegundirnar náðu ekki að berast þangað með Austur- Íslandsstraumnum.
